HOW TO LIVE AS AN ARTIST

The declined economy has certainly become forefront in everyone's minds in the last few years and artistic types are having a tough time right now if they don't know how to live like an artist. I have a unique perspective on this topic since I'm an artist who's also the president of a production company. Getting clear on expectations and disciplines is a big key to survival as an artist—here's a few that I've seen certain artists employ to success:

• If you want to be a successful artist, you shouldn't expect to drive a brand new car. You should strive to be financially successful enough to be able to have one that's a few years old and in very good, maintainable shape.

• If you want to be a successful artist, you shouldn't expect to independently own a home. The American Dream is not homeownership. Freedom is what our founding fathers came here for. Homeownership is certainly not freedom—ask anyone who's had trouble selling their house when it's time for a life change. Your independence is much more important as an artist.

• If you want to be a successful artist, you must return phone calls—every one. You must talk to people, you must engage. Opportunity comes through engaging the world-at-large. And when opportunity knocks, are you wise enough to listen and respond? It's imperative to respond to an offer even if your answer is no. If you don't show the respect of a return call to someone reaching out to you, you may never be called again by that person.

• If you want to be a successful artist, you shouldn't expect to be paid for everything you do. A paycheck and a career are two entirely different things. The first has importance, but the second is everything. Are you so focused on a little green dot that you miss an entire world waiting for you?

• Most successful artists create because they have to, because it makes them feel right with the world somehow. The world-at-large does not owe you a dollar for your work, but if you move something in someone, they will likely buy what you create because you've connected with them. If you really wanna pay your bills with your art, remember that monetizing anything is about connection. One has to connect with their market, which in the case of art is: your audience. Determine who they are and connect with them regularly.

The Death of an Artist occurs when they say no to something that they know they really should be doing just because they aren't being paid, or paid enough. At that point, the Artist becomes a Comptroller. You can't be both at once. Choose wisely.

It's incredibly important for any artist to discern benefits outside of dollars by doing certain things for free –or– even paying out for opportunities. Yep, that's what I said. Always keep in mind that no matter who's paying or getting paid: money is only one part of the exchange. If money is the ONLY benefit you receive in a certain situation, you should be doing something else.

And the worst thing an artist can do? Doing nothing. Being sulky and isolating themselves in their “avoidance vice” of choice leads to failure. The only time isolation is useful for an artist is during the creation process, and that's the only time. Successful artists remember that and keep isolation/social connection in balance.

Getting paid to do what you would do for free is a privilege. Those who keep that in mind are the most successful ones of all, regardless of their bank balance.
